The American Association of University Women (AAUW) has been helping educate women and promote gender equality since 1881. When the Gene Haas Foundation discovered all of the wonderful things they do for women, education, and societal causes, we just had to be a part of it. So, we gave the AAUW four grants totaling $6,700 from 2002 to 2008.
Women, Education, and the AAUW
From the moment the original group of 17 women met in 1881, the American Association of University Women knew they would accomplish great things. And have they ever. Right from the start, these women and their supporters used advocacy, education, and research to encourage women to pursue their dreams, and they have worked hard to help women achieve gender equality. Their goal is to continue until women are treated as equals in all aspects of life, including education, society, economics, and politics.
The members and supporters of the AAUW have touched many throughout history, and played an important role in helping women achieve their many successes. They received a heartfelt thank-you from Nobel Prize winner Marie Currie, opened the doors of institutions and fields once closed to women, and have been an important face in the fight for public education and the end of child labor. Today, the AAUW includes 500 educational partners and 100,000 members in over 1,000 branches. They work at all levels of community, and continue to change the way society thinks and operates.
The Gene Haas Foundation Shows Its Support For Women and Education
Mr. Haas and the Gene Haas Foundation want to ensure that the work of the AAUW continues as well, particularly in the traditionally male-dominated field of engineering. That’s why we’ve given the AAUW four grants. This money was used to encourage young women attending summer camps at the University of California, Santa Barbara to consider engineering careers.
Why? The Gene Haas Foundation believes that women have a lot to offer the industry. There’s always room for fresh minds and the skills of more talented engineers. The world will benefit from their accomplishments.
We also feel that the industry has a lot to offer these women. They can do things they enjoy, learn, grow, and have a chance to experience and do the things they’ve always wanted. There’s no end to what we can accomplish together.
The AAUW is only one of the academic and societal organizations that the Gene Haas Foundation supports. The Society of Manufacturing Engineers Education Fund, Ranken Technical College, several local chapters of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America, Perry Technical Institute, and many others have also received grants to improve the education of our nation’s youth. In all, the Gene Haas Foundation has given to more than 800 charitable organizations that work to make our world a better place, either through education, humanitarian efforts, medical support, or by just providing a safe place for families and children.
Mr. Haas and the Gene Haas Foundation firmly believe that, by working together, we can be far happier and more successful than we would be on our own. This makes the world a better place for everyone.
